Tears of Truth Part 2

See previous installment for all relevant disclaimers.

Summary: A codename is revealed and a first mission goes wrong.

"You at least owe me...something." Hiriko should have know better than to get in the car. She should have learned her lesson about trust. "Are you some kind of government agency or something?"

That brought a smile to Manx's face. "No. We bring those to justice who would ordinarily get away. But recently we faced some people not even we can deal with, and they are getting stronger." There was a hesitancy like she hated to admit it. "That's why we need your help and your 'gift'."

"How do you even know about that?" Hiriko was so careful, and she was certain her aunt would never mention anything about it.

"We have our ways. But don't worry, what we know we keep silent about. You will have team mates though, and it will be up to you what to say to them."

Hiriko gestured upstairs. "Those men?"

Manx shook her head. "No. They are already a team. You will be training with them though."

"Does that mean they are the best?" She asked as she shifted nervously on the small couch. "And what exactly will I be doing anyway?"

Manx grinned glancing back up at the flower shop, which seemed quieter. "Yes, they are the best." She leaned forward. "That's complicated, but you won't do anything you aren't ready for." Hiriko hoped that the woman kept that promise.

........

"That was good." The trainer said with a smile as she picked herself up on the floor. "You are picking up speed and confidence, that will help a lot." Hiriko had been training for three months now. She didn't mind it actually, well the physical part anyway. Her ability was still a big uncertain and they were still trying to help her gain control.

"Now, I want you to use your mind to try and distract me."

Hiriko bit her lip uncertainly. "I don't...I mean are you sure?" She didn't like using it, but they were insistent that she did as often as possible.

"Yes, I'm sure. If you're worried try something simple. Just project an image." The trainer got into position and Hiriko prepared herself. The sai that she used felt strangely right to her. They probably shouldn't, and that worried her, but for the moment she did her best to concentrate. She propelled herself forward all the while concentrating on an image that would be distracting. She saw immediately it wasn't working and focused instead on the trainer falling. For a second as she came in it didn't seem as if it had worked, but suddenly both she and the trainer were on the ground. "Not bad novice, you just might learn something yet." She stood up and helped the other woman. "Now let's do that again."

......

"Abyssinian here. Everyone pull out. Now." His voice was harsh and businesslike on the headphones, actually it was always like that, but Hiriko was fascinated anyway. The more she went to the flower shop the more she noticed him. She didn't ever actually talk to him. She tried, but every time she got near him she lost all of her nerve. She had spilled more tea in the last few months then she had in her life.

She was on the fire escape on her way to the waiting van when she saw someone moving through the shadows. Omi had his back to whoever, whatever, it was. She took a split second to think and decided to try and warn him mentally, wasn't that her job anyway. "Omi, lookout! Behind you to the left!" She wasn't sure it had worked until she saw him turn around and fire off a few darts. "Thanks, Athena." She wasn't used to her codename, but she smiled anyway. She should have known it wouldn't last when she gasped and fell to her knees barely managing to hold onto the railing.

"Well, aren't you juicy. That wasn't very nice, libechen." The nasal voice wasn't familiar, but she didn't even have a chance to wonder about as she felt something in her mind, almost like a pull, and noticed that she was standing. She tried to scream as she let go of the railing and started to fall. "Don't worry, this probably won't kill you. I will see you around." Everything seemed to move in slow motion as she felt herself hit the ground. As everything started to go dark the last thing she saw were violet eyes looking down at her as she felt warm arms picking her up.
