Tears of Truth Part 9
Please pay attention to previous disclaimers and warnings.
Summary: A plane trip and a new city leaves Hiriko wondering if she should finally open up to a certain redheaded swordsman.
Hiriko looked at her bags and realized that this was the first time she would be leaving Japan. If she had succeeded at getting her doctorate she would have traveled extensively, but she supposed it was true that when one door closed another opened, and really that part of her life was long gone and while missed she knew it was never coming back. Maybe that was for the best she couldn't help but think. She was in control of her power now, well as in control as she was likely to get. Schuldig always prompted her to use it more, make it feel more a part of her, but she didn't want to. She hated it, sometimes it felt unnatural when she did it. She knew that eventually, when she was on her own in Kritiker, she would be expected to use it whenever necessary, but even they weren't telling her she had to go to the lengths that her brother did. Maybe it was because of how her aunt had reacted to it as she grew up that made her feel so uncomfortable with it, but the truth was while she was glad to be useful and while she was glad it wasn't completely gone, she would always feel as if it was an afterthought to use it. She knew that could prove dangerous and occasionally she forced herself to go over the many reasons why she should practice more, not fear it, or whatever it was that made her hesitate. There were quite a few of them, but somehow it was never enough to convince her. With a shrug she figured that was a problem for another day as she took her bags downstairs.
She seemed to be the last, but did note that she didn't have the most stuff. Aya gave Yoji a few words about why he needed all of this. Yoji grinned simply saying that he didn't have to explain himself and that even though they were going on business he was going to enjoy himself. He was looking through a Japanese to French dictionary. She'd seen him a few hours ago, shortly after she had finished the first stage of packing, with an English to French one.
"You think you'll be able to manage anything with it?" She asked giving Aya her bags.
"I'll know when hear it spoken once we get there, otherwise I won't know if it will click." She had learned from the others that Yoji was interested in languages and that he helped teach a few of them what he had learned. "It's close enough to others I know that it might work."
"Well, it will be nice to have someone besides Schuldig who can help us out." She knew, from what little was said and the extensive things not said, that Weiss was having trouble putting their trust in Schwarz. She didn't blame them, but it seemed their options were limited. If they'd had more time then maybe they could have their own guide and this wouldn't be as much of an issue.
They would meet Schuldig and whoever else was going at the airport. It was a rush flight and then they would have one day/night of rest before they had to start looking around the city. The telepath had told them he knew a few places they should start, but that they would have to be careful and not call too much attention to themselves. No, they didn't have the element of surprise, but that didn't mean they should just act like they weren't likely being watched, because careful could mean the difference between getting what they needed, and ending up in the hospital again.
She had a book with her for the flight, but really she doubted she'd be able to concentrate on much so she was glad she had an Mp3 player. At least some music would pass the time.
When they got there the plane was small. Schuldig was standing beside it with Brad. "It'll just be us this time, though Nagi will be in contact if he's needed. Brad here will be taking care of details, so the legwork will be up to the rest of us." He said with a very familiar shrug as he boarded the plane.
The next few minutes were hectic as everyone got their luggage ready and loaded. Finally, Hiriko found herself sitting by the window. She wanted to be able to watch everything if she could since she didn't know when this chance would come again. She almost didn't notice that Aya was the last to get on and that the only seat left was beside her. She wasn't sure whether to be thankful that it was so small or to volunteer to change seats with someone.
"Good grief. Are you going to be like this the whole trip, because you know it's really going to annoy me." His nasal tone was somewhere between playful and incredulous.
"Shut up, Schuldig." She should probably sound angrier, but she was more frustrated with the fact that he was reminding her of her issues than with him.
"Now, now you should be more respectful, imouto. And you know eventually if you don't say something I just might." She turned around just long enough to glare, still not Aya strength, but she figured it was enough. "You are quite amusing. I don't lie, remember that though." She noticed his face in the reflection of the window and was startled at the look on his face. There was something about the intensity on it that said something else was going on with their whole conversation. "I suppose I have a bit to tell you, but not now." He laid his head back and made it quite clear that he would be ignoring her for the rest of the flight.
She didn't mind that really as she turned on her music. She was looking out the window when she heard Aya give a soft yawn and noticed that he closed his eyes. A few minutes later his head titled to the side and ended up on her shoulder. Her eyes widened and she wondered if she should wake him up so he could move, but she figured he needed the rest. It was nice anyway, even if she knew had he been awake he might never let himself get this close. There was a small part of her that wondered what he was thinking, but she didn't give into temptation and go into his mind instead focusing solely on the song playing. It was dark, intense, and strangely soft. It fit him somehow and it made her smile.
It was much later when they arrived and everyone was so tired all they cared about was finding a bed. Ays's nap hadn't lasted long and she could tell it hadn't done him as much good as it probably should have. They finally made it to their rooms and she dropped her stuff figuring she would unpack a little the next morning. They had arranged for her to a room to herself which she was thankful for. She didn't take long to get ready for bed and was asleep a sort time later.
A knock jarred her awake and she glanced over at the clock. Strangely, it was a little too dark for this time of the morning. "Just a second." She said quickly throwing on a robe. When she opened the door it was Aya who was waiting for her. "We're going to wait a bit for the rain to pass before we head out." That's why it was so dark.
"Okay, I'll get ready and then I guess get something to eat. Are we meeting somewhere?"
"We're going in groups of two. You and Schuldig are a team. He said he wanted to talk to you about something, and since he didn't expect too much to happen today it was a good chance." He shrugged and it seemed to her that maybe he was glad that he wouldn't have to deal with the German. "He'll be in the lobby downstairs he said. Maybe you should see if he wants to eat with you."
"Okay." She wondered what prompted him to consider that, but didn't get the chance to say anything as he walked away.
As she showered she thought about her brother's words from the plane. What would it really hurt for her to say something? Yeah, it might be tense for a little bit, but everyone was professional so would it really create a problem like she feared or was she just scared of rejection? It wouldn't be the end of the world if Aya said he wasn't interested. It would hurt, sure, but she was more than a little familiar with that type of pain. She got over it then and she could do it now. She might even be a little stronger after everything that had happened. So she would tell Aya, at least hint or something, but first to see what Schuldig was so intent on telling her. She had a feeling it had nothing to do with their mysterious father.
