Untitiled Death Note fic Part 2

Still not entirely sure where this going:

WARNINGS AND DISCLAIMERS: I own nothing about Death Note except my love for L. This section is very long. I sort of got hit with the idea and just kept writing, but I've sort of hit a snag now so. Not betaed, yet. It also jumps around a bit more than I would like, but I might rework it soon. I just felt it needed to written out.

PG-13 for some mention of violence involving a minor (15). Without giving away too much there will be a slightly different take on L after a particular scene. If I ever get my writing career going you will see the name Luciel from me again in the future.

It was two days later when L finally left his vigil heading in the direction of the castle. A part of him was still convinced he should remain, but finally he had been forced to admit there was nothing more he could do here. The woman who had been his guide in this place met him at the door. “I’m glad you came on your own.” She gave a slight smile before reaching for his hand. She noticed his hesitation before he finally accepted it. “There is one last thing for you to see of your previous life then it will be time for your rebirth.” He fixed her with an intent look that she paid no mind to as she led him into what appeared to be a dark tunnel. “Perhaps seeing this will allow you to completely say good-bye.”
He wasn’t so sure of that until he found himself alone in an abandoned building. His eyes were drawn to a figure that was lying on the stairs. “Light-kun?” He should of course not care about the other man’s fate but he found himself walking over.
“What are you doing here, L?” Light’s voice was strained and somewhat accusing as he glared up at his visitor.
“I was told if I saw this I would be able to let go.” He wasn’t sure how this was supposed to help, but he saw no reason to keep anything from the dying man.
“Oh.” And with a sigh the boy known as Light Yagami, Kira, took his last breath.
“It’s over.” He said to himself, but would it ever be? So many lives destroyed because of one book, one decision.
“Now, Laurian.” She was beside him once again. “It’s time.”
“I don’t understand you.” He whispered before his form faded away.
“I never said you had to.” She said with a slightly sad voice as she too disappeared from the building.

The King of the Shinigami surveyed his newest recruit. The Death Note he held in his hands ready and waiting for its new master. Of course it would be a while before the young Shinigami matured enough to really control it. In fact, the young man in front of him didn’t look any different than he had as a human. The changes would happen slowly the more that he used the Note. They would be quick at first, and physical, but then after that it slow and he would lose his memories and what little was left of his former identity. This time was the most critical and the King did not like to rush things, especially since he expected this young one to make things quite interesting. He would have to watch him closely and make sure he didn’t return to Earth until his transformation was complete. If he went to the other plane too soon there was no telling what trouble he would cause.
As the young man once known as Light Yagami opened his eyes the King grinned. At least things wouldn’t be boring around here anymore.

Kira never completely left the public consciousness, though it is true what they say that the history books are written by the winners and so nothing was ever mentioned in public records about the Death Note and the case was treated as any solved case. Very few in the world even knew that the original 'L' was dead as Near took the title and continued working.

Many, many years later…
“Nisan!” The young girl’s voice rang out as she caught up to her brother. His jet black hair covered his eyes which were so dark one would almost call them black. “I got your favorite sweets.”
He stopped finally and shook his head at her. “You know Dad won’t like you giving them to me.” His father did everything he could to discourage his son’s love of sweets. “And I’ll help you with your homework without them.”
“I know.” She laughed softly. “I just like doing something nice for you.” She made a slight face. “And Dad is just being silly.” Of course most fifteen year olds thought that of their parents.
“How about we go to the park? Dad won’t mind and I can eat them there.” They would have to call first of course.
“Okay.” She grinned a slight bounce in her walk as she headed in the direction of the local park. It wasn’t really much, but it was enough for the kids of the neighborhood.

He resisted the urge to laugh as he called their father promising that they would be home in time for dinner. That meant he could eat many of the candies, but they would have time to hide them somewhere.
They were both so intent in their studying and eating that neither teen noticed the young man picking up the white book with the title, ‘Death Note’ on it.

It was several hours later when the twins made their way inside. “We’re home.” Luciel announced dropping his backpack by the door. His sister, Sakura, rushed into the kitchen to help their father put everything on the table. They usually ate to the sound of the news, but their father had yet to turn the T.V. on as they sat around the table.
“So how was school?” Their father wasn’t home very much so he tried to make the most of the time the three of them had together.
“It was fine, father.” Luciel answered as he took a bite of his food. It always tasted so bland compared to his sweets, but he made sure that he always ate at least some of the food their father cooked because the teen knew how much it meant to him.
“I did well on my test, but it was all because Luci helped me.” Sakura grinned as she took a bite of her food and then gave a grin to her brother.
“You just have a hard time concentrating sometimes.” She could be as smart as he was if she really wanted, but she never worried about applying herself and she didn’t care as long as her grades were good enough that she didn’t get into trouble.
The small talk continued for a while until Luciel asked to be excused. There was one show, other than the news, that he never missed. It went over real cases and the forensics and the police work that went into solving them. It all felt familiar, though he could never explain why, and he always felt a little better after watching it. Mainly it just bored his sister though so she watched something downstairs usually.

At school Luciel always stayed to himself. He didn’t care, or even try, to have friends, other than his sister. He was more interested in learning, though his teachers sometimes didn’t know what to think of him. He asked too many questions, always had to be the first to answer, and had to point out any mistake he saw, no matter if it were another student or the teacher themselves. At lunch he would find a spot to himself and watch everyone around him with unblinking eyes. Though he didn’t like gossip, or getting involved in anyone else’s business, he always knew what was going on with others. It just seemed impossible to hide anything from his eyes.
The next week passed pretty quickly. At the end of that school day he found Sakura among her circle of friends and prepared to walk home with his sister like normal, but then he remembered today she was going shopping for a dance at the end of the week. Oh well, he thought, I’ll just go ahead home then. That was his plan until he remembered there were still a few sweets in his backpack. What harm would there be in stopping by the park again? His father probably expected him to get dragged off with Sakura so he wouldn’t expect either of them home for a while. He grinned rushing towards the park barely able to wait as he opened one of the candies. He found a spot under a tree to finish the rest. It took the sun going down to make him realize that he had lost track of the time. Both his father and his sister would be upset if he took too much longer so he gathered his things and started to run to his house. He was thinking to himself at least it wasn’t too far when he literally ran into someone. “I’m sorry.” He offered and gave a bow. He should have really paid more attention.
“Little twerp.” He heard the other say before he felt the slap that knocked him to the ground.
“I didn’t…” At least it hadn’t been hard enough to bust his lip. “I don’t mean any trouble.”
“Well you may not have wanted it, but you’ve got it.” His backpack was grabbed and thrown as he was dragged towards the middle of the park. He struggled, but he wasn’t stronger than the older man and pretty soon he was forced to give up or waste his energy. He could still get out of this if he remained calm. He hadn’t known that there was a building not far from the park until he realized that was where he was being taken. He supposed he hadn’t had any reason to go this far. He was pushed in and the door was closed behind him. At first he couldn’t hear anything so he had no idea what he should expect.
“I’m sorry. Just let me go home and I won’t say anything.” He had to remain calm. The building must be mostly empty since he could hear his voice echo back to him. The other didn’t answer him as he heard sounds coming from his right side. He had a choice then. He could remain still or try to figure out the layout of this place in case he had to run. He heard a scream and without thinking ran in that direction. He stumbled a few times, but as he got closer it sounded as if the person who had brought him here was arguing with someone, but he couldn’t hear another voice. Maybe he had called someone, but why would he do that? In fact, really none of the other’s actions made much sense to Luciel. “Hello?” He was knocked down as someone ran past him. As he looked up he noticed that it was the same person who brought him here, that they were holding a notebook, and that they looked almost scared and like they were running away from something.

It was about an hour later that he finally made it to his house. He was relieved to find that his backpack was right where it had fallen and didn’t seem to be any worse for he wear. “I’m home.” He called as soon as he opened the door. No one answered him back. Good, he thought, this way I won’t have to explain anything. It didn’t feel real anyway. It was only after he grabbed a banana for the kitchen that he realized that he hadn’t checked to see if anyone followed him. That could have been the point of the whole incident now that he thought about it. He took a frying pan from the kitchen and opened the front door. It took him a few minutes, but he managed to check the whole area. It seemed that he was alone. He gave a sigh of relief as he headed back inside. He was still on edge as he sat down to watch T.V. and so when the doorbell rang he quite literally jumped a little. He didn’t like the feeling of being surprised one bit and so he was a little angry when he opened the door. The fact that no one was there only made the whole thing worse. He almost slammed the door when he noticed a small slip of paper. Whoever it was must have left the paper. He picked it up without thinking and became even more annoyed when there was nothing on it. He threw it back outside closing and locking the door.

“I can’t believe I’ve found him so quickly.” The laugh was cold and had nothing to do with amusement. “This is working better than I thought. I will have to play this right though. I have to stay near him, but I can’t leave the person I’m possessing.” He made sure to pick up the paper so that it wasn’t found by anyone else. There were a few draw backs to being a Shinigami, but Light didn’t mind. He would work this out. The punk who had found the Death Note wasn’t afraid of using it, but he would have to be careful. He wasn’t sure he could control him and get what he was really after. He had risked the wrath of the Shinigami King by coming to Earth so he wasn’t about to blow his chance at L, Ryuzaki. Oh, there were minor differences of course, but he was no doubt the young boy who had answered the door was L. “I’ll be back.” He whispered as he made his way back to the park. Luckily it was close enough for him to have arranged this.

The next day after school Luciel had mostly put what had happened the night before out of his mind. A few things still bugged him though. “Luci.” His sister touched his shoulder gently. He turned to her and gave her a smile. She was really the only person he let get so close. He didn’t even like it when their father touched him. “I’m going to the beauty salon with my friends. We are going to pick out hairstyles and plan makeup for the party.”
“It’s okay. I’ll just head home.” He grinned. “You will call me though?”
“Yeah, as soon as we get there and before we leave.” She grinned. “Miyu’s mom will be with us the whole time.”
He nodded and hugged her good-bye. “’Kay. I’ll see you at home later then.” He waved as he watched her go and then he turned towards their house. He had no idea as he passed the park he was being watched.

That Friday night after Sakura left for the dance he felt restless for some reason. He had avoided the park yesterday. Something about it made him feel uneasy. But the more he stayed in the house the worse his restlessness got. Finally he headed to his favorite place in the park. He had his laptop with him and the light from it made his pale skin look almost ghostly.
“What is someone so young doing here so late?” The voice startled him so that the computer perched upon his knees almost fell off.
“That’s none of your business.” He returned trying not to sound too annoyed since he really didn’t want any more trouble.
The man laughed softly. “It might not be, but I’m curious. It’s not safe for you so late at night.”
“I’m perfectly fine on my own.” Luciel offered not turning his face from the computer screen.
“Maybe…I still think it might be a good idea if I stayed here, just in case.” It seemed as if the stranger wasn’t leaving.
Luciel shrugged. “I can’t stop you.” But he could certainly ignore him until he decided to leave on his own.
“No, you can’t.” The laugh was soft, but something about it sent a chill up his spine.
“Why are you so interested in me, mister?” Luciel finally turned his attention from the computer to the man. Though he couldn’t see much in the low light something about him seemed familiar. It was likely Luciel had seen him around the park before.
“You remind me of someone.” He could see the other man shrug. “And I’ve heard some stories that this park is getting dangerous lately.”
Luciel let out a small sound before turning back to his computer. “What should I call you then?”
“Oh, I should give my name before you give me yours?” The stranger’s voice sounded incredulous and slightly amused.
“I’m Luciel.” He finally answered after a few moments of thought.
“That’s better. I’m Light.” Something about that name made Luciel feel a little angry, stressed, and sad all at once. He didn’t like any of those feelings.
“That’s an odd name.” Luciel tried to make out his face, but really all he could see was dark eyes. He assumed they must be brown.
“Yes, I’ve been told it’s pretty rare. I could say the same of yours.” There was some quality in Light’s voice that Luciel couldn’t place.
“My mother was fond of it. I think it was the name of a character in a story she liked.” It sometimes hurt talking about his mother, but tonight it was more comforting than anything else.
“Was?”
“She died shortly after my sister and I were born.” His father wouldn’t talk about her so he and his sister had found out what they could on their own.
“I’m sorry.”
Luciel shrugged not really sure what to make of this Light. He should leave some part of his brain pointed out, but he didn’t get up. “Things like that happen, unfortunately.”
“Yes they do.” Light sighed. “There’s something I should tell you, Luciel.”
“And what would that be, Light-kun?” At first he wasn’t sure why he added the –kun. It just seemed right somehow.
He could swear he head Light gasp. Finally after a few moments he answered, “I saw what happened to you earlier this week.”
Now it was Luciel’s turn to feel uncomfortable. “What…I am not sure what you are talking about.”
“I think you know exactly what I am talking about.” He could hear Light leaning down beside him. “Don’t worry, though, Luciel. He won’t bother you ever again.”
“What did you do? Who are you?” He kept his voice calm, but he was preparing to run if necessary. He couldn’t help but think he had only himself to blame coming here alone. He would know better than to be so careless next time.
“I simply talked to him after I saw what he was up to. I already told you, I’m Light.”
Luciel didn’t say anything right away finishing gathering up his things. “Leave me alone, Light-kun.” He said before he took off in a run.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” He shouldn’t have been able to hear Light’s answer, but he did. It seemed as close as if Light whispered in his ear.

Over the weekend Luciel avoided being near the park. It wasn’t too abnormal that he would spend all of the weekend studying, but he knew that Sakura could sense something was upsetting him. He didn’t want to talk to her about it considering some of it was his fault. He should have just stayed home and then he wouldn’t have had the strange conversation that had him on edge. He’d even had nightmares for the past two nights. They were vague and he didn’t really remember then when he woke up, but he had a feeling that Light was somehow involved. He didn’t like feeling like this, but there wasn’t anything he could do about it. Sakura gave him looks as they ate dinner on Sunday, but he didn’t say anything. She didn’t want to let it go, but he rushed up to the room after he finished eating and pretended to be asleep. When he was convinced she had gone to bed he went out to the balcony and took a breath of fresh air. It didn’t help as much as he would have hoped, but it was the best he could do for the moment. He was turning to go back inside when he noticed a piece of paper that was being held down by a rock. He didn’t really want to pick it up, but he didn’t have any choice. There was just enough light to read it without turning on the light in his room. ‘I know you think you can just stay away from me, but you should know that is only annoying me. You will come here every day after school and meet me at that building. If you don’t I can’t promise your lovely sister or your father will be safe. Be here tomorrow, Luciel. You really don’t want to push me. Light’ He tore the paper up and made sure to hide it. Luckily he could be very quiet when he wanted and he didn’t think anyone would be able to put the message together from all the pieces he had made of it. Unfortunately, this didn’t leave him with any options. Light was dangerous and for some reason this very dangerous stranger was interested in him. How was he going to get out of this?

The next day after school he made his way to the building. He knew his sister didn’t really buy his excuse, but she wouldn’t question him too deeply until he made it back home so he would at least have some time to come up with something she would believe. “I’m here.” He didn’t like the echo that came back to him. It sounded too young, worried, maybe even a little scared.
“I knew you were smart enough to take me seriously.” Light grinned as he motioned for Luciel to come closer. Now that Luciel could see him he realized that he looked in his early twenties, his eyes were indeed brown, but they had a slight reddish tent to them, and his hair was a similar color. He was taller than Luciel, but then that was to be expected.
“What do you want with me?” He didn’t care if he was being rude. He preferred being direct when something bothered him.
“I am not quite sure to be honest.” Again there was a slight something in his voice that Luciel took as laughter. “I am keeping you near me until I figure it out.” He leaned in touching Luciel’s hair. “Does it scare you that I might be capable of killing you?”
“No, I’m not afraid of death.” He said staring intently into Light’s eyes.
“That’s strange to hear from one so young, but it doesn’t matter. This time I have all the power. Never forget that, little Luciel.” He said and he seemed to be focusing on something just above the teen’s head a slight smirk making him look even more dangerous. “Now sit. This chair should be comfortable for you. We have a lot of talking to do.” He gently pushed Luciel down into the chair. He leaned in closer to Luciel. “I might even share some very important information with you.” He watched waiting for some reaction it seemed to Luciel.
“What do you mean?” Luciel tried to move away, but Light’s closeness was making it impossible.
“It’s just we know each other. It happened a long time ago. In another lifetime you might say.” The smile on Light’s lips was cold and made Luciel want to run.
“I don’t believe you.” He glared at Light trying not to act like the closeness bothered him.
“Oh you will, little Luciel, you will.”

“Majesty, we know his location.” The Shinigami rushed over to the throne.
“That’s good. I can’t risk alerting him so for now simply keep an eye on him. As long as he plays by the rules we won’t act.” He sighed feeling very put out that he even had to deal with this situation.
“But, Sir, as he is…”
“I know. I know. There isn’t any reason to believe he is attracted to anyone though, or that he will even consider it.” Until the physical part of the transformation process was complete it was possible for a Shinigami to have sex with a human. This was why the King made sure they didn’t leave until the process was over, but Light had found a way to escape. His fixation with L and with the human who was the detective’s reincarnation had been something that the King had not planned for. “Only move if there is no choice. For now I must admit I am curious as to what he will do.” At least Light was providing more amusement than the King had experienced in a long while. It was almost worth the annoyance.

The only time Luciel found any peace was at school. Sakura seemed to buy his reason that he had met someone that he could only meet at certain times. She even believed that the reason he had to go alone was that they shouldn’t be seen together because he was much older and might get in trouble. He hadn’t wanted her to believe any of it, but he was also relieved. At least for now he could keep her safe and out of whatever it was that he had gotten himself into.
Like every other day before since making this deal he returned to the building. Like before he noticed a new piece of furniture, or convenience for him that just happened to show up. Light wouldn’t explain it, but it didn’t reassure him. It only made him feel more convinced that one day Light wasn’t going to let him leave. “I’m here.”
“Welcome back, Luciel.” Light greeted him and he almost sounded happy except for that smile that sent a shiver down Luciel’s back. “Have you remembered anything?”
“No.” He shook his head lying easily. He’d remembered a vague scene from a dream a few nights before. He was talking to someone about ‘Kira’. He was pretty certain that person was Light. He knew a little bit of ‘Kira’ from his history books. They didn’t say much though so he’d been doing his own research when he could, which really wasn’t often, to find out more.
“That’s too bad. I thought our little chats would help.” Light sat down on the couch that had showed up a couple of days ago. “Come here, Luciel.”
He very badly wanted to say no, but the truth was if this was somehow connected to ‘Kira’ he couldn’t be sure his sister and father would be safe so he did as he was requested.
“Good.” Light pulled him closer which elicited a gasp from him. “If you protested it might be fun at first, but then it would get boring quickly. Now, I believe we have an understanding so it’s time for me to show you something.” Luciel had noticed that Light carried a notebook strapped to his side. It was weird, but considering he thought the other crazy he hadn’t questioned it. Now Light opened the book so he could see it.
“Death Note?” Though the cover was in English the rules just inside the cover were in Japanese. Even though he was very proficient at English it was a relief he wouldn’t have to work it out with Light so close.
“This is a Death Note and with it I can kill any human I wish.” He noticed that Light seemed wistful almost as he touched it. “Shortly before we met in this past life I have mentioned a Shinigami gave one to me. I used it to kill criminals. You worked against me.” His hold tightened until Luciel wasn’t sure if he could breathe and then Light slowly loosened his grip. “Another Shinigami dropped another Death Note.” Light’s brow furrowed. “A lot of it is vague. I was afraid until I found you that it would disappear, but it seems the more I have you near me the more I remember. You were L. the world’s greatest detective. And I killed you. Well that is not entirely true. I convinced the second Shinigami to kill you.” Luciel tried to pull away, but Light’s hold was tight enough that he couldn’t.
“Let me go.” He needed to get away. He needed to breathe.
“No, Luciel. That’s quite impossible I’m afraid. I need you to be able to remember it all. Now stay still.” His grip turned painful again until Luciel stopped moving. “I have become a Shinigami and you have been reborn. I would have preferred you to find my Death Note, but I don’t mind that it has worked out this way. I will have to get rid of the current user eventually, but for now I am letting him do what he wants until I am ready.”
“Ready for what? What are you going to do to me?” Luciel knew he was in over his head, but he wasn’t sure there was anyone he could go to. Who would believe him after all?
“I still haven’t decided. You could be cooperative. Make it easier for me, but that was never your style was it, L?”
“I’m not L!” He almost shouted. “I will never be him no matter if I remember anything.”
“Shhhhhhh. Calm down, Luciel. You don’t want anyone else to hear, do you?” He leaned forward slightly so he could whisper in the teen’s ear. “You, and the owner of the Note, are the only ones who can see or hear me. Everyone might think you are going crazy and what would become of you then?”
“I don’t care. At least it would get me away from you.” Luciel still wasn’t sure he could believe anything Light said, but he knew he wanted to get far away from the man and forget he’d ever seen him.
“But I care.” And the tone of surprise in Light’s tone distracted Luciel from his anger for the moment and before he knew it the other man was kissing him. He still couldn’t pull away from Light so he went still hoping that he would be let go so he could run.
“Interesting.” Light watched him intently as he licked his lips. His expression seemed some combination of a smirk and surprise. “I can’t go too far from the owner of the Death Note, but he doesn’t go anywhere until somewhat late at night. You will continue coming here. I don’t care if you remember, but I won’t forget. I won’t lose.”
“You don’t look like I thought a Shinigami would.” Luciel finally offered after a few moments of tense silence.
“I have wondered about that myself.” Light shrugged. “I didn’t stay long enough for explanations. If I had to hazard a guess I would say there’s a process to it; that little by little I will change.” He didn’t sound very happy about it and Luciel supposed that he couldn’t blame him.
“I…I don’t know what you want to say.” Luciel didn’t like the closeness, but he was trying not to think about it too much.
“You could talk about your day at school, what you want to do when you graduate, dreams you might remember.” Light moved one of his hands to touch Luciel’s hair.
“Don’t.” Luciel squirmed again trying to get some space between them, though he knew it wouldn’t do any good. “How is that going to help you? I mean if that is what this is all about.”
“I don’t know. And it isn’t just about me. I was curious when I realized it was you. I watched you while I pretended to play by their rules. I realized quickly I would have to do something so I escaped and returned to Earth, specifically here in Japan. I dropped the book I had taken from another Shinigami and waited. I thought you, or your sister, might find it, but some petty punk who runs messages for one of the local gangs did. He likes uses it so I don’t mind hanging around. Eventually, though I will grow bored with him. I have things I want to do. That means someone else will have to take over ownership.”
“And how would they do that?” He would play along. Maybe he could figure out a way out of this.
“They would have to kill him while holding the book.” Light said calmly obviously not bothered by the mention of this person’s death.
“ That’s…” He shook his head. “I have to go home. My father will start asking questions eventually. I’m not sure how long I can do this.”
“I have been thinking about that myself.” He said as he played with a strand of Luciel’s hair. “I think you should stay here, but that is quite impractical at the moment.” His voice trailed off slightly as he thought. “I think you had better do your best to keep him out of what happens between us. If you don’t I will be forced to take action.” His tone was firm and another chill went down Luciel’s spine.
“I hate you.” He whispered.
“That doesn’t matter, Luciel.” Light not so gently turned him so that he was forced to look into the Shinigami’s eyes. “What matters is you are mine.” There was something in the way Light said it that was final. Light may not have come to some final decision of his fate, but from the moment he heard the words Luciel knew Light meant them and that he didn’t intend to ever let him go.

As their meetings continued Luciel became more withdrawn. Not only because he felt numb most of the time, but he thought it might be for the best for everyone involved. He knew that eventually Sakura would get the truth out of him, well maybe not the whole truth but enough to have some idea of what was going on. He dreaded that day because he knew how fierce she could be when she got something in her head. He wouldn’t be able to stop her and he couldn’t let himself think of the possible outcome. Somehow through all of it he kept his grades up in school. He wasn’t sure how he managed other than most of it was simply second nature to him, and the brief amount of time he got to study made him feel more like himself and gave him a little bit of confidence. Before he knew it though he realized that it was Halloween, his birthday. He knew he would never get away with being gone on the night of his birthday so he only had a few hours to come up with something Light would accept. There were times he was beginning to hate his life.
He told Sakura he was going to be delayed for just a few minutes then he would be home for the normal festivities. His Dad was really good about doing things for them, even though Luciel knew that it caused his father pain to remember that it wouldn’t be long until the next anniversary of their mother’s death.
He paused at the doorway and took a deep breath. “Light-kun?” Adding –kun always seemed to put Light in a better mood for some reason. Luciel didn’t really get it, but he would use it tonight.
“Hello Luciel. Did anything interesting happen at school today?” Light was sitting on the couch waiting for him to come over.
“No, not really.” It was always the same. He didn’t talk to anyone and just did his homework so really what could possibly happen? “Light-kun, I can’t stay tonight.” He did his best to make his voice sound firm and he did his best to look Light directly in the eyes.
“Oh? Why is that, Luciel?’ The Shinigami sounded annoyed as he walked over to where Luciel was standing.
“It’s our birthday. My father always takes off and we have cake and a nice dinner and sometimes we go to the mall to spend a bit of money he gives us.” Occasionally they would go to a museum or aquarium. He knew he liked these trips more than Sakura did, but she somehow always appeared to be having fun. She was probably a better liar than he was, or maybe watching him have fun was good enough for her.
“I see.” Light glanced to him looking thoughtful. “Very well. Only for tonight though. I mean it.”
“I know.” He sighed. At least Light wasn’t going to do anything. Light watched him go as he left and he definitely didn’t like the look he saw in the Shinigami’s eyes. He couldn’t exactly categorize it, but he knew it meant trouble.

After they got home Sakura cornered him in their room. “I haven’t talked to Dad yet, but this person you’ve met. Luciel, I’m afraid for you. You’ve been even more withdrawn since this all started and it’s scaring me.” She pulled him into a hug.
“Sakura, I’m fine, really. I will be alright.” He laid his head on her shoulder not really believing his own words, but hoping she did.
“You aren’t, Luci, and I’m worried. Don’t make me tell Dad.”
“Please don’t tell him, Sakura.” He tried not to sound too desperate as he looked her in the eyes. “You can’t. I can’t say anything else, but you’ve got to keep it from him.”
“I don’t like it.” She pouted slightly then went back to giving him a worried frown. “But I won’t, at least not for now. You have to talk to him though, soon. Something isn’t right. Maybe he can help?”
He couldn’t help of course, but that didn’t matter. The fact that Luciel had a bit more time was all that mattered for the moment. “I will. As soon as I can.” The lie was smooth and flawless. She grinned and hugged him once again before heading to her bed. He didn’t know how long he had so he didn’t sleep much that night trying to make his plans.

What Luciel couldn’t have known was that he had two allies. Ryuk had made his way down to the Earth. This time he had the permission of the Shinigami King. It seemed the Old Man thought he could maybe talk some sense into Light. “You were once sort of close. He might at least listen to you.” Ryuk didn’t buy that, but he was glad to be back anyway. He flew into the open window leaving the extra Death Note he had been granted out in the open. “Shinigami?” A soft voice asked. Near moved from the monitors he had been watching and touched the book with one finger. “Is there a reason you are here again?” It seemed the boy, now a man, didn’t want to waste any time. Ryuk quickly gave him the overview, even including new of L’s reincarnation. The Shinigami weren’t supposed to talk about that, but he’d been given a lot of leeway to get Light back.
“I see.” Near twirled a strand of his hair before glancing back to Ryuk. “We must get to this Luciel.” It was quite easy for ‘L’ to make the necessary plans. He wasn’t going to question how the Shinigami knew where to go. “I will need all the details you have and any ideas.” Near listened quietly as he arranged everything and had his representative go to Japan. Hopefully they weren’t too late.

Luciel almost didn’t go to school that morning. He could have really convinced his father that he was sick, but no he needed the time. He needed the few precious hours that were his alone. It would be all too soon that he would have to go see Light again and figure out where to go from there.
He was shocked when he called to the Principal’s office. He knew it could be anything to do with his actions and if it had to do with his father they would have asked for Sakura too.
“Yes, yes do come in.” The voice was gentle and as soon as the door was shut behind him Luciel concentrated on the stranger that was sitting in the guest chair. “This is Mr. River. He is head of a very prestigious school in England.”
“I am sorry if this is short notice, but we felt it imperative to speak to you after seeing your test scores.” Luciel didn’t like the intent way the man was watching him. It was like he knew something, like he could see through him.
“I am honored, but it would be difficult for me to leave my family, and we don’t have much money.” And he had enough problems at the moment without adding this to the list.
“I wish you would reconsider. Perhaps if you were able to see the campus?” Mr. River turned to the Principal. “I think it might be better if I could have a few moments alone?”
“Oh. Well I need to make an announcement so I think that would be alright. Should you need me I will just be in the other room.”
Luciel watched him go and then glanced back to the strange man. What did he think he could tell him that would make any difference?
He found those intent eyes on him again. “Have you recently met anyone named Light?”
“How did you know that?” He almost let himself hope just a little, but he wasn’t sure he could trust this Mr. River.
“You must come with me.”
“Why? What can you do?”
“We can take you somewhere he cannot follow. We have some knowledge of these things and can keep you safe.”
“How can you know he won’t find me?” He didn’t want to say the word Shinigami.
“Do you think it is safe to remain here?” He didn’t like this man, and the fact that he was echoing thoughts that he had wrestled with all of last night.
“I am not leaving with strangers.” He answered with a stubborn set to his expression.
Whatever Mr. River would have said in response didn’t come as the Principal returned.
“I’m sorry we didn’t have time to tell you more. Here is a brochure that hopefully will answer all of your questions. You can contact us at any time.” Mr. River gave a slight nod before leaving the room.
Luciel didn’t feel comforted at all as he held the paper loosely in his hand and walked back to class. It was just an hour before time to head home and he hadn’t come up with anything that would be of real help. He glanced to the paper again and wondered if he should call. One call wouldn’t hurt he supposed, but he would have to make it quick or Light would get suspicious. He dialed quickly before he could talk himself out of it. The ringing lasted for a few seconds before a soft male voice, very different from that of Mr. River, answered. “Hello, Luciel. My name is Near. I am aware of your problem, though I can’t explain very well how I know over the phone. If you wish to talk more you have a map of where to find us. We can help you.”
“I don’t know that you can. If I just leave there isn’t any guarantee, is there?”
“What we can offer you is hope. No, there are no guarantees, but then are never guarantees about life. We can offer you an option. It is up to you whether to take it, and when.”
“I can’t leave my family. They won’t be safe.” Or maybe he should leave? Maybe they would be safer that way?
“We can help with that, but the decision is yours. You can call this number at any time and we will bring you here.”
“To Englad? To some school?”
“Not exactly. Wammy’s House is something different, but you will always be welcome here.” The name brought up an image of a big building, bells, children.
“Because I was L?”
“That is only part of it, Luciel.”
“I don’t believe that.” He would have to run to make it so that Light wasn’t suspicious. “Thank you that you want to help, but I have to think about it.” He hung up and ran as fast as he could. He knew Light wouldn’t give up and there was a chance he would find him if he left.

“You’re late.” Light was waiting for him shutting the door as soon as he made it in.
“Sorry, Light-kun. One of my classmates asked me a question about the homework.” He sat down his bag doing his best not reveal that he had been contacted.
“It’s okay. Just don’t let it happen again. I was worried.” Luciel didn’t believe that, but he nodded anyway. He wanted to keep Light in as good a mood as possible.
